Sarah L. Barnes
Sarah joined Broening Oberg Woods & Wilson as a lateral associate in 2005, and she was elected partner in 2008. Sarah practices in the areas of business, municipal, Section 1983, employment, professional liability and real estate litigation, as well as general business and appellate work. She also has extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution as a judge pro tem for Maricopa County for the last four years.
Sarah practices regularly in both federal and state courts, handling client needs at all stages of litigation including pre-litigation assessment and investigation, preparation of pleadings, discovery, motion practice, preliminary injunctive hearings, evidentiary hearings, and trials. Additionally, she has significant appellate experience, having repeatedly handled both appeals to the State Appellate Court and Ninth Circuit, including oral argument at both.
Sarah earned her J.D., cum laude, from Arizona State University in May of 2000. While in law school, Sarah earned honors and received several academic awards, including honors in Legal Research and Writing, the CALI and CJS Awards for Highest Scores and Academic Excellence in Civil Procedure & Torts, Runner-up Best Brief and Oralist in the Appellate Advocacy Competition, and was a Moot Court Competition Finalist.
Prior to joining the firm in 2005, Sarah practiced with the Phoenix office of a national law firm (where she also clerked in law school) in the areas of commercial and real estate litigation, employment, government liability and appellate work.
Sarah has lived most of her life in Arizona, having moved with her family from Wisconsin as a child. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University in 1995. Sarah resides in Chandler, where she grew up. She is an avid sports fan, especially football, and she enjoys spending time with her family watching her son's college football games, as well as watching pro games together and participating in their long running family fantasy football league.
